What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is an established, recognised system of diagnosis and treatment that lays its main emphasis on the structural integrity of the body. It examines the structure and function of the body and how parts of the body (bones, joints, ligaments, discs, muscles, tendons and nerves) work together. A breakdown of the body’s normal working patterns can result in unnecessary stress and pain. This can be caused by one major event or the cumulative effect of repetitive minor strains. Osteopathy's main strength is the unique way the patient is assessed from a mechanical, functional and postural standpoint and the safe, natural, manual methods of treatment applied to suit the individual needs of the patient.

The aim of osteopathy is to help the body repair itself by restoring normal function to the areas which are causing the symptoms. Osteopaths use their hands both to investigate the underlying causes of pain and to carry out treatment.
