As part of Cumbria County Council?s Aiming High for Disabled Children, Transforming Short Breaks programme, The Kepplewray Project has recently received funding from the Cumbria Community Foundation, which will enable us to offer a short weekend break to families with a disabled child, for only ?10 per person



The information attached will allow you to register your interest in participating in this opportunity and to take advantage of following



?        a residential weekend based at The Kepplewray Centre in Broughton-in-Furness, from Friday 19 march to Sunday 21 march 2010



?        fully-accessible facilities, staffed by a team experienced in working regularly with people with disabilities



?        full board accommodation, including cooked breakfast, packed lunch and 3 course evening meal



?        2 days of adventurous activities such as canoeing, climbing, archery, abseiling, team challenges, etc



Families wishing to apply must be resident in Cumbria and have a disabled child between the ages of 8 - 13.  The disabled child must also meet at least one of the following criteria



?        children on the autistic spectrum, who have severe learning disabilities or behaviour which is challenging



?        children with complex health needs, including those with disability & life-limiting conditions



?        children who require palliative care



?        children who have moving/handling needs &/or require special equipment/adaptations



?        children with cognitive or sensory impairments



?        children whose challenging behaviour is as a result of their disability



Because of restrictions of both funding and residential capacity of the centre, Kepplewray can, unfortunately, only cater for 16 family groups.  Therefore, places will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

We have just returned from this weekend.  Generally it was good fun and the people were very friendly and helpful.  Didn't think I would ever see Matthew (quad cp) 'climbing a tree' or 'abseiling' (touch of poetic licence needed) but the general ethos of the place was total inclusivity and all children should be able to take part in all activities - if they wished.

Would have been nice if someone had been around when people arrived on the Friday evening instead of every wandering around not sure where to go or what to do but other than that, when the 'house people' and 'activity people' did appear they showed us our rooms, answered all our questions etc.

We were lucky enough to be able to take advantage of a subsidised weekend, but looking at the website the non-subsidised weekends look good value too.

Jack, our other son,while not having any special needs, is not, shall we say, one of nature's natural athletes(!) really enjoyed himself and it gave him real a confidence boost being able to do the activities and was asking when we can go again!
