Claiming Methods for Self-Employed (Bicycles)

You generally have two options for claiming bicycle costs on your Self Assessment tax return:

1/HMRC Advisory Rate (20p per mile): While not explicitly listed under Simplified Expenses for the self-employed, HMRC often accepts the 20p per mile rate as a "reasonable" estimate of business costs. This is the simplest method and avoids tracking every repair or equipment purchase.

2/Actual Costs Method: You can claim the business proportion of your actual cycling expenses. This includes:Capital Allowances: A portion of the bike's purchase price.Running Costs: Repairs, maintenance, insurance, and safety gear (e.g., helmets, high-vis).Private Use Adjustment: If you use the bike for personal trips, you must reduce your claim accordingly. For example, if 50% of your cycling is personal, you can only claim 50% of the costs
